The Europaviertel in Frankfurt am Main is currently being built on the site of the former main freight and marshalling yard. With a development area of around 60 ha, this project is currently one of the largest urban development projects in Germany. The new district, which is being built in a central inner-city location, will in future offer space for about 9,600 residents and about 32,000 employees. The direct vicinity of the trade fair, a five-minute walk to the main railway station and the banking district, the S-Bahn (commuter train) link to the airport 15 km away, the extension of the light railway to the west, which is currently being implemented, and the link to the autobahn – they all guarantee short walking distances and fast connections and will optimally connect the new district to the surrounding areas.

The development of an inner-city reconversion site into a new urban district fits in well with the guiding principle of sustainable urban development where inner-urban development takes precedence over land consumption outside of the city limits. In the design phase, special consideration is given to the various requirements of public spaces. In addition to the highly frequented main arteries for motorised traffic, the topics of barrier-free access, children and senior citizens, cycle traffic, generous recreation and exercise areas, car traffic compatible with the residential environment and attractive street spaces and squares form the basis of the design and are coordinated with the technical agencies in interdisciplinary dialogue. The special quality of use of the centrally located Europagarten as a high-quality park and noise protection for the residential buildings on the edge of the park were achieved by constructing a 395 m long tunnel in the centre of the Europaviertel.
